Modern Sunrooms with a Twist

Photography by Chuck Hamilton

it’s time to start thinking about opening the windows, breathing in the fresh air and enjoying the abundant sunshine.  But, why wait until the weather is warm to enjoy bringing the outdoors inside? You can do just that by incorporating a sunroom into your home.

Lehigh Valley Magazine recently visited S&D Renovations, Inc., located in Breinigsville, to learn more about a stunning sunroom they recently built for a local home in Orefield.

Steven Dormann, president of S&D Renovations, Inc., calls this specific project a contemporary sunroom with an edge.

The original “room” was actually a basic outdoor covered porch. After meeting with local architect Doug Patt, Dormann and the homeowners decided to take it one step further and transform the addition into a modern version of a sunroom, truly allowing for spectacular views of the outdoors.

The custom-made NanaWall lift-and-slide doors measure 12 by 10 feet, running floor-to-ceiling, and resemble the look of modern, upscale restaurants that feature outside views.  When the doors are opened, there is no sill, just a continuation of the beautiful flooring. The flat roof features skylights and a bead-board ceiling. No worries of snow buildup or puddles as the room pitches into two drains that run underground. The outdoor “windows” feature custom-made Phantom screens and shades that disappear into a track and can be operated remotely.  Depending on the weather, the home owner can adjust them to his or her liking – all the way up, halfway, quarter way or completely shut.

The homeowners are thrilled with their renovation, reminding them of contemporary homes in California they admired while visiting their son who moved out West.

Of course, a detailed renovation like this one takes time and patience.

“It is imperative for everyone on the project to work together, and communication is key,” says Dormann.  “We want to keep the project running as smooth as possible for the homeowner.”

It’s not surprising that this particular home renovation won the 2016 Lehigh Valley Builders Association Award for sunrooms.

S&D Renovations, Inc. has been beautifying Lehigh Valley homes for 27 years, and they’ve been winning various Builders Association Awards since 1999. In addition to the sunroom award, they also won in the “Kitchen Category Under $50,000” as well as “Commercial Remodeling” for 2016.

S&D Renovations, Inc. is a full-service remodeling company, doing both interior and exterior renovations. Dormann has been involved in the business his entire life since his father built houses for many years.  He has a staff of six highly qualified employees working in the field.

“Home renovations can be time-consuming and stressful if you don’t know what you’re doing and can actually end up costing you more out of your wallet,” Dormann says.

He recommends letting professionals do the job.  At S&D Renovations, Inc., he personally meets with clients and designs a build program that will assist them with completing their ideas within a specific budget.

After 10 to 15 years of owning a home, things need to be replaced, and certain rooms may not be as functional as they were originally built to be. Some of Dormann’s clients include homeowners who are looking to replace smaller kitchens with an open-concept design, build additions over garages and finish basements allowing for additional living space.
