Getting Kids Active in the Lehigh Valley

September is National Childhood Obesity Month. According to the CDC, 1 in 5 children in the U.S. (17 percent), suffers from obesity. The rate of obesity in children, ages 6 to 11, increased from 6.5 to 19.6 percent between 1980 and 2008. Children who are obese can suffer from major health problems, including hypertension, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Emotional problems and bullying can also occur more regularly. Also, the increased use of electronics doesn’t help matters. Over the last several years, there has been a major push in our country to get kids moving. Here in the Lehigh Valley, children and their families are moving in the right direction, toward getting active and getting healthy.
